Avant-garde cellist/composer Arthur Russell has had more attention since dying prematurely in 1992 than he ever enjoyed alive whilst while flitting between off-kilter disco eruptions and bucolic drone music. Continuing to impress new listeners are the New Yorker’s beautifully understated melodies, gently restless spirit and wicked humour. Only Russell would name songs You Have Did the Right Thing When You Put That Skylight In, and Is It All Over My Face?  The latter is slinkily covered on this 26-song homage by British producer Blood Orange, who downplays the original’s sexual innuendo by merging it with the forlorn horns of Tower of Meaning. The fusion creates a fresh hybrid of Russell’s clubbing and classical sides in a classy slice of modern disco. Equally impressive and sympathetic to source material are Devendra Banhart and Sufjan Stevens who resurrect Russell’s woozy vocal style and sense of wonder. Similarly good: Hot Chip’s unstably groovy rethink and  Robyn who turns in a celebratory romp the Tom Tom Club would be proud of. – Paris Pompor

Master Mix embodies the genre-defying, experimental spirit that defined Russell’s work. Living in the East Village from the ‘70s until his untimely death in 1992 at age 40 from AIDS-related causes, Russell moved effortlessly between the city’s various music scenes, recording disco beats alongside Nicky Siano one night, and the next, crafting slow, haunting tracks in his apartment with his cello and idiosyncratic warbling voice. The New Yorker called his work “stranded between lands real and imagined: the street and the cornfield; the soft bohemian New York and the hard Studio 54 New York; the cheery bold strokes of pop and the liberating possibilities of abstract art.” Through his collaborations, he earned the admiration of artists like Allen Ginsberg, David Byrne and Philip Glass, who said of Russell’s music: “It does not submit to formula, but subverts the formula.” The record features 26 tracks by more than 20 artists, including Hot Chip, Sufjan Stevens, Phosphorescent, Blood Orange, The Autumn Defense and Lonnie Holley, paying homage to Russell’s boundless creativity and wide-ranging work, which swerved from electronic dance to folk to classical and resulted in what NPR hails as “catchy and hypnotic records that were far ahead of their time.”

I was introduced to Arthur Russell’s music by the marvelous Paul Heck – of Red Hot and East Village Radio fame. I would sleep in his spare room when in New York and we would talk music. One day, back home in Melbourne Australia, Paul wrote to me outlining Red Hot’s intention to put together a compilation of recordings by artists, celebrating the music of Arthur Russell. Of course I jumped at the opportunity. 

The time signature changes in “Planted A Thought” is what initially drew me to this particular track. The guitar playing as well — but mostly I liked the loose psychedelic cello sections. The thing that speaks to me the most about Arthur Russell’s music is his lack of restraint. It’s pure expression, it’s a beautiful and complicated extension of his own being. Like the paintings of the great impressionists.
I’m thrilled to be a part on this project. On the same record as some of my favourite artists. Thanks Paul, thanks Red Hot and thank you Arthur Russell for the music.

Luke Escombe – The Vegetable Plot – Tour Dates

The Vegetable plot grew from a small seed planted in the imagination of singer-songwriter and musical comedian Luke Escombe back in 2007, when he noticed how much some of his shaggy-haired musician friends resembled members of the Muppets. For years, nothing broke through the soil, until one morning, as he watched his 11-month old son contemplate a piece of broccoli, he idly picked up his guitar and strummed away in delight as the lyrics and melodies of dozens of songs began to tumble out like peas from a shell.

Now that seed has grown into the freshest, juiciest, rootsiest new band in town: The Vegetable Plot!

Leading the bunch are the deep-voiced Aspara Gus (Escombe) and his four delectable singing sensations: Sue Kini (Hannah Crofts), Colly Flower (Georgia Mooney), Ru Barb (Katie Wighton) and Rockit Lettuce (Elana Stone)– better known to older Sydney audiences as the songbirds of alt-country sensation “All our Exes live in Texas”.

Bringing the groove and crunch are the rhythm section of bassist Rutabaga (Noel Mason), guitarist Purple Haze (Aaron Flower) and drummer Mr Beet (Jamie Cameron), who together go by the name of “The Root Vegetables”.

Adding the top notes of melody, colour and flavour are keyboardist Tom Ato (Michael McGlynn), horn maestro Blowbergine (Ross Harrington) and earthshaking dancer Tina Turnip (Pip Ryan). Together, they combine to create an irresistibly fun and delicious musical stew.

Fiona Bevan’s debut album; don’t let anybody tell you cover aft isn’t
important. As the beam traces the disc (doesn’t have the same ring
to it as needle on vinyl!), it’s the extraordinary voice that commands
attention, an instrument of sweet beauty lying somewhere between Kate Bush and quirky American folk singer Anais Mitchell. Finally, it is the sheer infectiousness of this literate and, at times, complex music that sinks its claws into you.

Having written a global Number One for boy band One Direction, Bevan clearly has an ear for a hook, but don’t let her clientele cloud your vision, for this is popular music with intelligence.

The 12 songs were all penned by Bevan and lyrically draw heavily upon her literature background, with numerous film and literary references. Album opener ‘Rebel Without A Cause’ metaphorically references James Dean in a commentary about the London riots, whilst’Exorcist’ is inspired by Daphne Du Maurier’s ‘Rebecca’. Despite the uplifting elegance of its melody,’Us And The Darkness’
is cloaked in the heartbreak of a shattered romance, and ‘Dial D For Denial’ is simply pop artistry.

TalkTo Strangers was recorded direct on analogue equipment, with Bevan playing everything from ukulele, piano, guital harp, violin, double bass and accordion, truly a one-woman show. The crowning glory is album closer’Last Days Of Decadence’, a lone piano reflecting the emotional ebbs and flows of her exhortations on the financial crisis. Four years in the making, TalkTo Strangers is pop imbued with folk sensibilities, as idiosyncratic as it is enchanting, and Fiona Bevan as startling a talent as any to emerge in recent years.

An audacious debut album packed with the type of songs that make you want to sing along, make you want to dance, and make you feel uncomfortable all at the same time, True Loves won the band a well deserved round of huzzahs from all of the key tastemakers and helped expand the band’s audience both in the US and abroad. In 2012, Hooray for Earth made their maiden voyage to the UK and saw their single “No Love” reach the Alist on BBC Radio 1.

With Chris Coady (Grizzly Bear, Beach House, Future Islands) in thecoproducer’s seat, the sessions for Racy took place at Dreamland in Kingston, NY and at DNA Downtown in NYC over the rst few months of 2013. Crafting a more uid listening experience with Racy also meant a more active role in the studio for Heroux’s longtime bandmates bassist Chris Principe, drummer Joe Ciampini, and keyboardist/vocalist Jessica Zambri. “I’m still writing, arranging and doing the preliminary recording”, Heroux says. “But then it’s all funneled out through our scrappy rock band.” Racy is very much a rock album. THE AUSTRALIAN MUSIC MUSEUM PROJECT

In July 2017  Australian rock’n’roll will be 60 years old. It was born when Johnny O’Keefe released The Wild One on 5th July 1958. AMMP is pushing for a national music museum by 2018 with exclusive stories, rare film clips, unseen photographs and a petition.

There have been many calls for an “Australian music Hall of Fame”
(Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum) or a “contemporary music centre incorporating a
Hall of Fame “(Music Victoria CEO Patrick Donovan). AMMP has been set up to help restart the discussion. It even offers music fans the chance to create a digital plaque like this one for Skyhooks’ Shirley Strachan.

AMMP is the work of former music editor, journalist and author Jessica Adams, who started the campaign for a Melbourne lane way honouring Chrissy Amphlett after she interviewed her for Time Out Melbourne at the request of her friend, editor and author Jenny Valentish.

AMMP is supported by Charley Drayton (Cold Chisel, Divinyls), Rick Grossman (Hoodoo Gurus, Divinyls), Reg Mombassa (Dog Trumpet, Mental As Anything), Midnight Oil, Patricia Amphlett (Little Pattie, also Chrissy’s cousin) and  Amphlett’s agent and friend Fran Moore.

Brian Setzer – New Solo Album – Rockabilly Riot-All Original

SETZER says, “Yeah, ‘Let’s Shake,’ how come no one has thought of that title yet?  We’ve been making rock ‘n roll now for 60 years and no one has come up with ‘Let’s Shake?’  And I came up with it and I went ‘wow…Let’s Shake!’ You know, oh god, it’s just so simple it’s magic!  It’s got a really great guitar solo in it, just rock ‘n roll sounding…it’s not really ‘billy’ sounding, it’s more rock and roll… again, it’s the simplest songs that are the hardest to write.”

ROCKABILLY RIOT: ALL ORIGINAL is a straight-ahead rockabilly album from start to finish with 12 new songs. SETZER brings his trademark twang and fretboard fire, and he’s backed by three musicians that he says “are the best in their craft”: Mark Winchester (bass), Kevin McKendree (piano) and Noah Levy (drums). Recorded in Nashville, the album was produced by Peter Collins (who’s handled the same honours for SETZER albums Vavoom! and The Dirty Boogie).

Single Lets Shake is at Media NOW, The Planet Company will release the full length Deluxe Packaged LP AUGUST 15.

About Brian:

3-time Grammy-award-winner, Brian Setzer is a “Musician’s Musician” credited with continually taking chances with innovative and daring musical styles, while single-handedly resurrecting two forgotten genres of music (rockabilly in the ‘80’s and swing in the ’90’s).  Along the way he has scored chart-topping hits throughout his decorated career as founder/leader of the Stray Cats, his 18-piece Brian Setzer Orchestra, and as a solo artist. He is consistently cited as one of the world’s greatest living guitarists, and has a best-selling, extensive line of elite Gretsch signature model guitars bearing his name. Brian made a cameo in the 1987 film, La Bamba (the biographical film written following the life and career of Chicano rock ‘n’ roll star Ritchie Valens), portraying rockabilly pioneer Eddie Cochran. In 2002, Brian earned the distinct honor of being one of the few musicians to be animated in an episode of “The Simpsons,” an episode which also featured rock ‘n’ roll legends Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.

Trends come and go, but the idea of a bunch of guys getting together in a garage and playing the kind of music that makes the neighbors call the cops — that’s forever. And it’s that idea that’s crystallized in the form of San Diego Band Radio Moscow. The power trio led by the Stratocaster genius Parker Griggs have found THE formula : powerful, crunching Sabbathstyle chords and fiery solos that earn the right to be called Hendrixian and plants its flag firmly in the territory where psychedelic rock and cranked-up blues meet. Parker’s demo caught the ear of The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, who produced the 2007 self-titled debut. With « Brain Cycles », their second album Radio Moscow proves that they’re not a cheap time machine but a direct descendant from the golden age of Rock’n’Roll.  In 2011, Griggs continued his psychedelic trip with « The Great Escape of Leslie Magnafuzz », and now in 2014 the band is about to unleash their 4th studio album “Magical Dirt” on Alive Naturalsound, with high goals of sending you on another trip into heavy psychedelic headphone heaven.

Luke Escombe’s previous album Mantown spent 9 straight months in the top ten of the Australian Blues and Roots chart, spawning two unforgettably twisted music videos and garnering comparisons to everyone from Nick Cave to Flight of the Conchords.

Now the Sydney singer-songwriter announces the release of his first feature length DVD Chronic Symphonic, as well as two other live albums – Live on the Coast and Live at the Promethean – all on the same day.

These live releases highlight the remarkable journey Luke Escombe has made over the last two years, from blues and roots musician, to provocative musical satirist, stand up comedian, health ambassador and public speaker. Last year he spoke and performed in every major city in Australia, as well as in Auckland and Wellington, where he received a standing ovation at the Te Papa National Museum. Chronic Symphonic is where all of his different identities intersect, backed by an 8-piece band, a giant projector screen and a string section.

The show was recorded at Notes Live in Newtown as part of the 2012 Sydney Fringe. It received a 4 and a half star review fromJohn Shand in the Sydney Morning Herald, who described Luke as “a rock-soul singer, raconteur, blistering blues guitarist, comedian and songwriter, and very good at them all”. The 70 minute performance included an airing of Luke’s gangsta rap music video about living with Crohn’s disease – “Master Key” – and a finale that involved the members of the audience joyfully simulating an act of self-love.

 Over twelve thousand dollars was raised in just five days last September through crowdfunding website Pozible.com to fund the release of Chronic Symphonic on DVD. This has made it possible to release the recordings of two other live shows: Live on the Coast and Live at the Promethean, the former recorded at Wagstaffe Hall on the NSW Central Coast with Luke’s rock and roll 4-piece “The Corporation” and the latter recorded at the Promethean in Adelaide in a stripped-down duo format, with Luke accompanied by young Melbourne bassist James Gilligan.

Bloom’s song choices are interesting and at times inspired (his reading of Ewan MacColl’s The Joy of Living is just that: a joy)…. His guitar lines breathe fresh life into covers of John Martyn’s Head and Heart and the Keith Jarrett-inspired choice,My Wild Irish Rose. Siobhan Long / Irish Times 

With artists like Luka, for whom music is as fundamental as a heart beat, there can be no surprise that an album as fully realised as Head & Heart has come along so soon after 2012’s superb This New Morning. Luka explains that it has been an irresistible transition.

“After This New Morning’s release, and inspired by Jarrett’s approach, I found myself learning, re-learning and writing a whole raft of similar songs, and really enjoying it. But there was a problem: it would have been just so easy for me to take the material into familiar surroundings and record the songs with familiar arrangements and no risks. Something told me to be patient, that some of the songs needed something more.”

“Then one day I met my friend Paul G. Smyth outside Tower Records in Dublin. Paul is a great piano player. We got to talking about the songs and the seed was sown for piano involvement in the project. I sent Paul the songs. He voiced his approval and interest, but with typical magnanimity insisted I actually needed to work with the Phil Ware trio.”

The Phil Ware Trio – Phil on piano, Dave Redmond on double bass, Kevin Brady on drums – appealed to Luka immediately, not least considering the connection with Jarrett, and he contacted them.

“This was new territory for me,” admits Luka. “I wanted to create a landscape for the songs which would enhance them but also somehow expose them in a very naked way. So came about the mad idea to just meet with the lads for the first time in the studio and instantly record with no rehearsal. Just feel the songs; play them, serve them, record them and release them.” Luka admits that recording live and unrehearsed with unfamiliar musicians was a “terrifying” but a “fantastic” experience, “utterly rewarding”.

Six of the tracks on the record come from those two days in the studio with the Phil Ware Trio, including two new ones by Luka. Of the other six songs on the record, five are solo – many of which, like ‘Danny Boy’ and Ewan McColl’s ‘The Joy of Living’ might be seen as “standards”, songs that Luka’s fans will be eager to hear how he puts his own inimitable stamp on them. And the sixth? “Well,” Luka continues the story, “we had decided ‘My Wild Irish Rose’ would be best with just piano, vocal and guitar, and booked the studio for another day. On the day, Phil was ill and couldn’t come in. Brian Masterson and myself were in the studio in Wicklow wondering what to do when in came Paul Wade, piano-tuner for Phil. As he was tuning and playing away, I commented to Brian that he was a pretty tasty player. ‘Hey Paul’, says I, ‘Have you ever been recorded?’ ‘Nope’, says Paul. ‘Would you like to be?’ says I. ‘OK,’ says Paul.”
