Lecia Louise Q & A + Reviews Following Album Release

We were lucky enough to chat to Lecia as she blasted through Sydney on her Winter Warmer tour last week, she told us all about how she got her start in music, the new album Strike to Ignite and much more..

The Musician Decision
“When I was about 13 my older sister received an electric guitar for her 16th birthday. My step dad Alan taught us what he knew, which was about 4-5 songs. I ended up taking over her guitar. When Alan introduced me to music such as Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix I was hooked!
Early Influences
Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix were my ultimate influences in the early days. Then Chris Cheney from The Living End, Sarah McLeod from The Superjesus and eventually, Jeff Beck, John Mayer, Sheryl Crow, Ani DiFranco, The Allman Brothers and more. I was a pretty big Michael Jackson fan as a kid too.
Writing Process
Most of my music starts off from either a guitar riff or progression which might come about from some sort of free feeling often being in a new location or maybe learning a new song, or experiencing a huge new feeling.
First Record Bought
The first CD I bought was Powderfinger’s Double Allergic.
Current Inspirations
I have really been enjoying listening to Grace Potter, Emily Wolfe, Kathleen Halloran, Stefan Hauk, Blake Mills, Jackie Marshall and many more.
The Live Show Experience
Ultimately I love to play live with my band either as a trio or 4 piece. There is a lot of freedom to move, especially in the 3 piece when I have my main guys. I love to go on tangents with them and keep each other on our toes and see where we end up. All the shows I play are quite different but I love playing festivals with the band and bringing energy to the audience and interacting and trying to make everyone feel good including myself and bandmates. I feed off energy from the band members and love when I am playing with players who love to push it to the edge and reach some great dynamic ranges and head to some unexpected exciting places. Sometimes we deviate from the setlist and bring something fresh and unknown on the spot, and see where we end up.
Favourite Artists of All Time
Tough question. I love so many different styles of music, as a kid it was definitely Michael Jackson. I’m also a huge fan of LP, who is an alternative pop artist.
To Become a Successful Artist
I think there’s a lot more than one thing that I need to become a successful artist, but if I had to narrow it down to one, I think having a supportive close knit team that loves what I do almost as much as me and we all care about each other’s success. It’s important to me to have people I trust nearby that share truth and contribute and help for the music to get out there. The music may have been created by me, but it is external to me now. It’s a huge job for local grassroots independent original musicians to try and reach people who potentially will love their music. It takes a team! Oh yeah — and some money would definitely help too!
Future Plans
The plan for 2026 and 2027 is to tour and play as much as possible and get the new album out there to people who will hopefully love it. I hope to collaborate with other artists on the road, while also playing with my own band. It would be pretty cool to do some live recordings of the album tracks, so I might come back to that after this year of touring and see if we can get some dollars to go into a studio or record a live gig.

I would really love to get overseas and play again. I have not done so since Covid, and have since been enjoying focussing on Australia. But I am getting excited about the idea of playing OS again.
At some point I’ll start thinking about the next album, who I will record it with and where. I have some ideas on this, but for now I’m focussed on getting Strike to Ignite out there.”

NEW REVIEWS
“This collection of rock energy and roots finesse and seductive blues and soulful vibes and…well, everything great about that New World beat, is about as good a gathering together of American musical infusion as you could wish for.” – Dave Franklin

“After such a long journey to completion, Strike To Ignite sounds like an album about refusing to be extinguished. Relationships fail, touring becomes exhausting and plans go wrong, but another song always seems to emerge from the wreckage. Lecia Louise does not merely sing about resilience; across these eleven songs, she turns it into fuel.”

“There are artists who sing songs, and then there are artists who seem to inhabit every note they play. Lecia Louise belongs firmly in the second category.” – Samuel Fredrickson

13-Year-Old Guitar Prodigy JayBird Byrne ABC Appearance and Single ‘Pups At Work’

JayBird Byrne, a 13-year-old guitarist, based in Redcliffe QLD, home of the Bee Gees in their younger years,  has been captivating audiences with her extraordinary talent since she started playing the guitar at the age of 8.

Following her debut on ABC TV last month on the 100 Instruments Countdown featuring in the Electric Guitar section with her own interview and live performance Jaybird Byrne now releases the single ‘Pups At Work’ a guitar instrumental drawing on her extreme talent and the many high pedigree influences she draws on.

A recent shoutout from another young Australian guitar prodigy Taj Farrant has helped to boost her profile even further.

This up-tempo electric guitar instrumental with full band backing comes right out of the box from the start and never lets up. Think Joe Satriani meets Hendrix but then add that JayBird is 13 years old, and you get the ‘wow’ factor.  This girl is one to watch.

Now her skills have attracted the attention of Australia’s National Broadcaster…

Tripe J Radio and ABC TV have just completed shooting with Jaybird for the 100 Countdown with The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra to be aired on Sat 24 of June 2023. Time Slot is 7.30pm. This comprised a 7 hour shoot and interview at Team Musicare in Queensland. Jaybird is one of the features of the show.

JayBird said“Im so excited to be asked to be included in the National broadcast on ABC. We were in shock when we heard Triple J and ABC had been in touch with my management. Its quite surreal for me. I’m very grateful to all my team and especially my parents who have helped and supported me from day one.”

Her debut single, ‘Convergence’, received widespread acclaim, earning her the prestigious First Prize with Honours at the International Youth Music Competition in the Modern & Contemporary Category. The judges praised her composition, describing it as “impressive work at such a young age, excellent balance of instrumentation and texture … guitar playing skills are fantastic and precise“.

Despite her tender age, JayBird delivers performances with an intensity and spirit that surpass her years. In 2022, she secured the coveted title of ‘Best Guitarist’ at the RockFEST competition, leaving the judges astounded. They hailed her performance as “fantastic” and an absolute showstopper, acknowledging her incredible energy and mind-blowing level of ability.
The first 60 seconds of this video says it all here

Her passion for performing is matched only by her unwavering dedication to practice(4 hours a day), making her a rising star in the guitar world. Under the guidance and mentorship of Simon Gardner, JayBird has refined her technique and honed her song writing skills.

Drawing inspiration from legendary guitar virtuosos and already receiving comparisons to Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Steve Vai, and Joe Satriani, JayBird has developed a unique style that showcases her admiration for these influential figures.

JayBird Byrne is undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with, and her musical journey is poised to captivate audiences worldwide.

JayBird will be on iView on Saturday 24th June at 7:30pm this Sat (AEST).

Her new single ‘Pups at Work’ will be out on July 7

 Song Description

JayBird – ‘Pups at Work’ is all of my dog training experiences expressed as an instrumental rock guitar song. The song’s progressive rock feel represents the training and unpredictability of the ‘pups at work’. According to my pup, it is: Dog training, but on my human’s guitar.’
