Scott’s recent release EXTINCT (2025), continues his tradition of combining sharp, introspective lyrics with innovative soundscapes. His music is characterised by its melodic structures, layered instrumentation, and a penchant for exploring themes of modernity and human experience.

The Insufferable Paul Scott is a Sydney-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist known for his sharp wit, eclectic sound, and prolific output. Emerging from Australia’s indie scene, Scott has played bass and guitar for numerous acts, including The Likes of You, Montana, The Kingdom of Jones and Bad Machines, performing everywhere from community halls to the Sydney Opera House, from Australia and New Zealand to Europe and the USA.

In 2019, he launched his solo career with the debut album Surrender to Robots, a lo-fi, genre-blending collection that drew favourable comparisons to art rock acts such as Of Montreal and The Notwist. This was followed by a string of EPs and albums that showcased his evolving sound and lyrical prowess. Notable releases include Radio Station (2020), Tea and Medals (2021), and Dopamine Mining (2024).

Tea and Medals, recorded during the COVID-19 lockdowns, stands out as a 12-track album featuring collaborations with producers like Steve Melville (The Tea Party, Regurgitator) and Tim Powles (The Church). The album blends indie rock, synth-pop, and jangle pop, reflecting Scott’s diverse musical influences.

Paul Scott Releases New Single ‘The Angry Boyz’

Musically the track is somewhere between pop, punk and disco, which I have never referred to as ‘posco’. Lyrically it went like this: I was witness to a statement purporting to be fact that was so egregious in it’s falsehood and so inept in it’s delivery, it made me laugh. A comic manifesto for the angry boys. That’s how it starts, not just the song, but also the trouble. ‘Garbage truckers’ is not a reference to the good people of our cities’ sanitation departments, it’s the gossip we drown in.

Paul Scott began his career in music, writing and playing bass in angular NZ group Pop Mechanix. Despite court cases, a revolving cast of singers and multiple record labels, their single ‘Jumping Out A Window’ became a staple of New Zealand pop culture.

Relocating to Australia, Paul formed Montana with Ken Stewart (Mr Blonde), Michelle Margherita and Steve Melville. Their first release featured ‘Koolest Band’ which received national airplay and high rotation on JJJ. A brief tour of the USA and a performance at SXSW, led to ‘Koolest Band’ being included in the Hollywood movie ‘You Drive Me Crazy’. The subsequent album ‘Bubblegum Love’ was released in Australia, Spain, France and the USA.

Scott has since plied bass for various Australian acts, playing everywhere from community halls and malls in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to the Sydney Opera House. Teaming up with Steve Melville (ex Mr Blonde and Montana) Paul and Steve have established a studio production relationship, playing on each other’s tracks (Stewart and Melville, The Likes of You) and coproducing The Insufferable Paul Scott’s well received 2021 album ‘Tea and Medals’ (which Melville also mixed).

Their most recent project is a closer collaboration with Melville adding drums, percussion and keyboards to Scott’s voice, guitar and bass, a line up very close in sound and feel to their youthful unit ‘Montana’. “I was looking for the kind of pop thrill I used to get from great Aussie indie bands such as The Falling Joys, Smudge, The Hummingbirds, pop thrills… you know?” says Scott.  An album has been completed and tracks will be released over the next few months on Foghorn, home to most of their releases to date.

Saturday Morning TV, do you remember, would you go back? They are always selling tickets to the past, would you retreat to the days of innocence and simplicity? The past is a foreign country and we, with our poisoned knowledge, will not be welcomed.  We are forever fated to fall forward into our mutual futures; what was felt then will never be felt again. Change consumes us and as some things degrade, we can also evolve, we can burnish our souls. The synths sounds are relics, the guitars refer to a digital past, all matt gloss and sharp edges.

Montana Release EP ‘Nearer’ (2024 Remaster)

Montana was formed in Sydney in 1998 by Paul Scott, Ken Stewart, Steve Melville and Michelle Margherita. They began playing at friend’s parties and around the Sydney inner-city indie circuit, sharing the bill with Mr Blonde, The John Reed Club, Youth Group and 78 Saab.

Within a few months they had booked time at Damien Gerard Studios to begin work with legendary in-house engineer Russell Pilling, the tracks recorded including the debut single ‘Koolest Band’, formed part of their debut EP.

Koolest Band received significant airplay on independent stations across Australia and national broadcaster JJJ put the song on high rotation. Interest from US labels resulted in the band playing shows in Los Angeles, including a spot at the Whiskey a Go Go and at SXSW.

Following the release of Koolest Band EP and another year of constant gigging in Australia and the US, the three piece (Michelle Margherita, Steve Melville and Paul Scott) felt confident enough in the studio to stretch out sonically. Tracks for the follow up were recorded at Velvet Sounds studio under Pitt Street in the heart of Sydney.

There were many talented people involved in the recording of the Nearer EP, but special mention must be made of Tony Wall and Adrian Grigorieff who tracked most of the songs and the late, great Craig Porteils who mixed them. The EP sold out its first pressing in less than a week, causing a few headaches for their small indie label Velvet Lounge and debuted at number 9 in the indie charts.

Kaiyah Mercedes Releases Album ‘Trying To Hate You’

Paul Scott Releases New Single ‘Old People On Drugs’

‘Old People on Drugs’ is the first track from a new collection of songs from Scott and Melville exploring the tones and textures of eighties electronic pop.  Lyrically it rummages through the hazy interworld of various ‘drugs’, from pharmacy to propaganda, prescribed, self-medicated or addicted that suffuse the soul as the animal vigour fades.

Older adults engaging in recreational drug use can be a complex and overlooked phenomenon often resulting in addiction.  As people age, their social circles shrink, leading to feelings of isolation or boredom.  Dumb ideas can be addictive too…So that’s what I think, but really, I’d rather not say anything – Paul Scott.

Siri Lini Releases Album ‘Beautiful Day’

Siri Lini is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose new alternative album Beautiful Day is filled with rock, folk, and pop stories of Southwestern landscapes and the people that populate them.
Raised in Dallas, Texas, Siri learned guitar and started singing in the 3rd grade. She found Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, and folk standards and sang for friends, family, and neighborhood events. Siri formed post-punk, all-female power trio Disbanned at the height of the Dallas indie scene, writing, singing, playing bass, releasing their debut album, and touring.
“I’m a Libra,” she says. “My mission is and always has been to create.”

Paul Scott Releases Single ‘Back To The Old Town’

As part of the rollout for his forthcoming 2024 album ‘Faster Than Witches’, The Insufferable one releases the 3rd offering in this 2023 trio of videos and singles already receiving rotation airplay on community stations, most notably Sydney’s 2SER Breakfast the past 10 days.

‘You spend so much time trying to escape and when you do, you’re dragged back for the best and worst possible reasons. I always resented my hometown, why? Because everything was happening everywhere else. I was a provincial; envious, frustrated and motivated to flee. And I did. Whenever I’d return, I held a glimmer of hope in my heart that I’d see the old town in a new light, that time would reveal virtues and treasures previously hidden to me and I’d come to appreciate it with a provincial pride enjoyed by those who stayed. It never happened. And yet, and yet… back to the old town I go.’

Paul Scott’s happy and uptempo look at a childhood spent in small town NZ. Paul’s trademark jangly and hooky indie pop guitars with some very insightful lyrics. The drums and bass lock it all down with a catchy sing along part rolling over and over in the track.
